HomePowers of Three: Full Film
So that’s a wrap: edit over, music score locked down, finished film in our hands. Yes, our new surf documentary Powers of Three is finally here, bringing to an end six memorable months in the company of the film’s three protagonists, Tom Lowe, Fergal Smith and Mickey Smith.
Looking back, all those involved should feel at least a smidgen of pride. We certainly do. What started as a loose exploration of three Artists cutting their teeth on some brutal Irish breaks - spend some time out there, shoot some surf footage, head back - gradually evolved into something a little deeper. A story emerged, a group portrait of human camaraderie and togetherness cast against the stark beauty of Ireland’s jagged coast. A surf film first and foremost, the action we shot in the water still proved as compelling as anything we could have wished for, but we suspect it will be this powerful convergence of man and nature, locked together through the long winter months, and as much out of the water as in it, that we’ll remember most vividly. Some days were undeniably difficult, and others, as the film will testify, were dangerous. At all times, though, it proved rewarding. We just hope you enjoy it too.
Check out our interview with the big wave surfers Twiggy and Greg and the bonus footage here.
Saturday's Telegraph called it "a stunning new surf movie" and "an almost transcendental quest to surf where others simply do not go", read the full article here.

Ever since going on a surfing trip to Ireland with three of my best mates, it has held a special place in my heart. I love all the people I met there, I love the ruggedness of the coastal landscape, I love the climate and I love all the - for us - wonderful waves we caught during our week's stay.
This film has simply taken my love, not only for Ireland, but also for surfing my (sometimes) freezing cold local breaks here in Norway where I live. Fergal summed it up beautifully right in the beginning, and I've not missed a swell since I first saw this awesome tribute to Irish surfing. Those guys are an inspiration to all us surfers to get out and make the most of what we have. Heck, it serves as inspiration to any living, breathing human being!
Thank you so much for making Powers of Three. And please do make a DVD release sometime, because I truly do need a high-quality copy of my own :)

Thank you!
This is such an amazing documentary. I watched it last night on channel 4 and now can't stop watching it. As a wakeboarder, surfer and scuba diving instructor I just want to be in the water after watching this. This is so well presented and shows such a beautiful side to Ireland. Powers Of Three is truly inspiring!!
Please please bring this out on DVD.

This film was so beautiful and poignant, even though I'm not a surfer, I couldn't stop watching it. Fantastic photography (brilliant grade), great music and a really simple story told so eloquently by the 3 powers. Loved it, loved it, loved it. Why isn't there more of this type of documentary?! This one will stay with me, thank you so much.

The film as a impressive footage and is a different approach from the others surf documentaries. Reminds me my home (in the winter time) of west coast of Portugal which is pretty the same of west coast of Ireland...both are exposure to the open sea.
My respects for the team.

Wow! Speachless.....This will probably pave the way fof future surfing films. Love the way the whole atmosphere of the film comes accross as a love for the waves and not the money orientated lifestyle that you assosiate with pro surfing. The Music realy captures the feelings that you can seldem put into words about why you are out there day after day.
Well done guys you have given inspiration to many by showing surfings true face.
Awsome.

that was the dogsbollex i make mad stuntbike vids-dvds and know how much hard work u must have put in to that brillent work keep it up
Posted By madcount on 14/8/09
Brilliant!!
The typical surfing vids you find of guys constantly thrashing waves with their 90's grunge soundtracks are so tired and so old ... it's refreshing to see a film about big wave surfing that quietly and elegantly captures the purity of the sport.
Keep it up!
Posted By Jason on 11/8/09
You guys are amazing out there! Keep up the good work!
Posted By Niklas on 11/8/09
Aside from the jet ski this would have to be surfing in one of it's purest form, surfing for the sake of the experience alone. Raw and soul stiring stuff without doubt. The ocean and environment both appear primal which surely would only help to highten the whole experience here.
To a degree I envy the surfers in this film because they are living the real surfers life in a rare and relatively untainted form. Seemingly quite humble men interacting with a higher energy without all the gloating that is usually associated with the current surfing world, many could learn much from this.
Great little film. Congradulations.

Beautiful film.I am not a surfer,i am a fisherman, and my father before me.There is a certain magic in watching someone work with the incredible power in these kind of waves.First heard about this when Kelly Slater said he was very impressed with it in an interview, has taken a while to find on the net,but the wait was worth it.You captured it guys,it's their, right their, with perfect music and the right words. The best surfing film i have seen, and maybe the best i will ever see.
Respect to you all.

Sounds naff to say BUT your surf film changed my life, ever thankful, to your drive and passion , what an awesome display of the human spirit and the hearts of 3 linked with a Dream! Blessings form London, England.

the video is awesome! for me, the sea awakens some opposite feelings. while the sea is beautiful and brings calm to those who contemplate paradoxically it is aggressive, furious, overwhelming. but the video is amazing, a delight for anyone who appreciates the beauty of nature!
